Situated along the banks of the Tagus River, the €20 million museum seamlessly connects with the Tejo Power Station, an iconic example of industrial architecture from the early 20th century. The visionary design of the museum is credited to Amanda Levete Architects, creating a harmonious dialogue between the old and the new.

MAAT's mission is to showcase a diverse range of national and international exhibitions by contemporary artists, architects, and thinkers. Additionally, it offers insights into the EDP Foundation's Art Collection, presenting curated perspectives that reflect current themes and trends in the art world.

The museum's journey began with the opening of four exhibitions in the renovated spaces of the Tejo Power Station building in June 2016. Later that year, on 5th October, the new MAAT building welcomed the public with a grand-scale installation by French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, specially created for the space.
