Saint John the Baptist Church (Igreja de São João Baptista), Óbidos

Over the course of the 16th century, significant renovations transformed the church as it became part of the Almshouse of Óbidos. The result is the current configuration—a single nave and chancel covered by a pointed rib vault, featuring the Cross of Christ at its center.

The church was connected to the leprosy hospital through a galilee, evident by the remaining arches inside. During the reign of King João III in the mid-16th century, further expansion took place. The nave was enlarged between 1530 and 1550, closing off the galilee, and the exterior was adorned with buttresses and a new portal in a classic style. Notably, a retable from Garcia Fernandes' workshop, created around 1540-1550, was installed, depicting scenes from the Martyrdom of Saint Vincent (now housed in the Óbidos Municipal Museum).

In the 17th century, the parish of Saint John the Baptist of Mocharro relocated to this church, previously situated outside the city walls. This event prompted additional remodeling, including the painting of the chancel vault with polychrome brutesco motifs. The devastating 1755 earthquake impacted the church, leading to the construction of a bell tower and the installation of the current Rococo style altarpiece in the chancel, featuring a canvas portraying Saint John the Baptist.

In 2003, the church underwent renovations to transform it into the Óbidos Parish Museum, ensuring its historical and cultural significance would be preserved for generations to come. Today, visitors can explore this magnificent church, admire its architectural details, and gain insights into the religious and cultural heritage of Óbidos.
